At the beginning of the 19th century, Tripoli’s Muslims and Orthodox Christians agreed to replace the old church that was adjacent to the Ouayseya Mosque in the Old City with a mosque in the Tarbeeh area to build a new church. In 1908 the work of St. Nicholas Church began with an oriental style, thus the rectangular shape without domes and characterized by four galleries.
This church is considered a museum for the ancient icons. Some of the icons were transferred from the main church at the old city, one of which was the Lady icon, the shepherd of the church dating back to the fifteenth century. During the restoration of the icon in France, they discovered that it contains several icons on top of each other.
