St. George’s Church is about 300 years old. It was built in 1732 under the reign of Archbishop Makarios and the governor of Tripoli, Suleiman Pasha, above St. Gerges cavern, a rocky cavity under St. Georjios altar that was a worship site before the church was built.
St. Georges Church has a collection of beautiful and distinctive icons, most of which dates back to the early 19th century.
The church has three galleries; the middle hall was named after St. Georges, Virgin Mary’s hall to the left and St. Decetrius hall to the right. The church is considered an architectural masterpiece where Crusader and Mamluk architectural touches are quite evident.
